What Is License Plate Renewal in Iowa?

License plate renewal in Iowa keeps your vehicle registration active for another 12 months. The physical license plate and number remain with the vehicle. You receive a new registration card and sticker for the rear license plate.

  • Annual cycle. Each standard registration lasts one year, ending on the last day of the owner’s birth month, according to the Iowa Code § 321.40.
  • Renewal is not the same transaction as titling a newly acquired vehicle. Title transfer occurs at the county treasurer’s office during a sale; renewal simply extends an existing registration.
  • Passenger vehicles, pickups, motorcycles, travel trailers, and motorhomes follow the annual birth month cycle. Commercial trucks and trailers registered by gross weight also renew annually through the Iowa Department of Motor Vehicles.

When Do You Need To Renew Your Iowa License Plate?

Your registration expires at midnight on the last day of your birth month. The Iowa Department of Transportation’s vehicle registration page confirms that renewal notices are sent approximately 30 days before expiration.

  • Early renewal can be completed up to 30 days before the expiration date. The county treasurer’s office and online portal open the renewal window at this point.
  • Iowa does not provide a grace period after expiration. Driving with an expired registration is a violation under Iowa Code § 321.34, and the fee structure described in the cost breakdown below applies immediately.
  • Late penalty of 5% of the annual fee is added for each month or part of a month the renewal is overdue, as specified by the Iowa Department of Transportation.
  • No safety inspection or emissions test is required to complete renewal anywhere in Iowa.
