Replacement License Plate in Iowa

What is a License Plate Replacement in Iowa?

Replacement in Iowa is an unscheduled reissue of license plates prompted by loss, theft, damage, or illegibility. The Iowa Department of Transportation sets the rules; your county treasurer’s office processes the transaction.

  • Replacement differs from annual registration renewal. The replacement fee is a fixed $5 for standard plates (or pair), while the renewal fee is calculated based on vehicle weight, list price, and age (Iowa Code § 321.42).
  • Iowa is a two-plate state. Front and rear plates are required on most motor vehicles; motorcycles and autocycles have only one rear plate (Iowa Code § 321.37). Replacement always issues a complete set of two plates for vehicles with standard plates.
  • Standard plates receive a new plate number upon replacement. Personalized and specialty plates retain the original plate message, but the county treasurer must order a duplicate from the Iowa Department of Transportation, which takes additional processing time.
  • Residual plates must be surrendered to the county treasurer’s office upon receiving the new set.

When Do You Need to Replace Your Iowa License Plate?

The law requires immediate action. Owners must apply for a replacement as soon as a plate or pair of plates is lost or becomes illegible (Iowa Code § 321.42).

  • Lost, stolen, damaged, or illegible plates are subject to replacement. The county treasurer may waive the replacement fee if the plate was lost in a documented accident, but proof of the accident must be presented at issuance.
  • Iowa does not require a police report for lost or stolen plates. The Iowa DOT replacement page does not mention law enforcement filing as a prerequisite.
  • There is no specific day count defining the replacement window for damaged plates. The statutory language (“immediately”) broadly applies to any plate that is no longer legible.
  • New residents must title and register within 30 days of establishing residency in Iowa, even if out-of-state plates remain valid (Iowa DOT New Resident Registration). This 30-day countdown runs a separate process from the replacement channel described here.

How to Get a Replacement License Plate in Iowa

Plate replacement is handled through your county treasurer’s office. No online or mail channel covers standard plate replacement.

  • Before visiting, ensure you have your current vehicle registration. Without it, the office charges an additional $3 for a replacement registration card, increasing the total to $8 instead of $5.
  • Bring any residual plate remaining on the vehicle. The county treasurer collects it upon issuing the new pair. For standard plates, a new set of two is provided at the counter during the same visit.
  • Specialty and personalized plates follow a different path. The county treasurer submits an Application for Iowa Replacement Plate (Form 411006) to the Iowa Department of Transportation, which manufactures the plate. You will be notified when the plate arrives at the treasurer’s office for pickup.
  • Payment methods vary by county. Polk County accepts electronic checks, debit, and credit cards (transaction fees apply). Other counties may accept only cash or checks; confirm with your county treasurer before visiting.
  • The online portal described in the next section covers renewals, not plate replacements. A brief phone call to your county treasurer can confirm availability and office hours.

Can You Replace Iowa License Plates Online?

No. Iowa does not accept online plate replacements. The Iowa Tax and Tags Online Portal processes only registration renewals, not plate replacements.

The portal accepts Discover, MasterCard, Visa, and electronic checks. A non-refundable service delivery fee applies to each online renewal transaction. Requests for replacement stickers and duplicate registrations can be made by phone through some county treasurers (Polk County accepts these requests at 515-286-3030), but the physical plate must be handled in person.

Every Iowa county has a treasurer’s office that handles plate replacements. The Iowa Treasurers County Map shows addresses and contact information for all 99 counties. Some counties encourage or require appointments for motor vehicle transactions.

Replacing a standard plate requires an in-person visit to your county treasurer. Plan to bring your registration and residual plate and leave with a new set the same day.

How Much is License Plate Replacement in Iowa?

The fee structure is straightforward, but an additional fee for a missing registration card and the higher cost of specialty plates can alter the total.

  • $5 for a replacement plate or pair of plates for any standard (non-specialty) plate type. The statute sets this figure uniformly; the vehicle class does not change it (Iowa Code § 321.42).
  • Replacing a specialty plate issued under Iowa Code § 321.60 costs $40, a significant jump from the standard plate fee.
  • A replacement registration card adds $3 if your current registration is unavailable. Owners arriving without registration pay a total of $8 for standard plates ($5 + $3).
  • No county or local fee is imposed on the replacement transaction itself. The $5 (or $40) fee is a statutory amount collected statewide.
  • Credit and debit card transaction fees apply in counties that accept card payments, though the surcharge amount varies by county. Paying with cash or check avoids this.
